Food is an inescapable component of life. It is categorized as a basic necessity alongside shelter and clothing. It gives us the energy and the nutrient to grow and develop, be healthy and active, to move, work , play,  think and learn. There is an old saying – you will become what you eat. As our body parts – muscles, organs, tissues and bones , all are made of billions of cell. These cells need energy , vitamins and minerals to grow, function and communicate. Their source of nourishment comes from the process of digestion. Digestion is most of all the transformation of food ingested into molecules assimilated by our body.

Good nutrition is an important part of leading a healthy lifestyle. Combined with physical activity, your diet can help you to reach and maintain a healthy weight, reduce your risk of chronic disease (like heart disease and cancer). Food is made up of nutrients. There are types of nutrients- micro-nutrients and macro-nutrients.  Micro-nutrients such as vitamins and minerals are needed only in small amounts. Macro nutrients such as carbohydrates, protein and fat are needed in larger amounts. The body can’t function properly if one or more nutrients are missing.
